Essential Information about Venice

Getting around Venice

Venice is a city that is best experienced on foot. That said there is efficient public and private transport on the canals. The cheapest way to get around Venice canals is by water bus (vaporetto). Traghetti (gondola “ferry”) also traverse across the Grand Canal at regular points

  • Walking

Most visitors can see  Venice on foot through the labyrinth of narrow lanes, squares and bridges. Walking can also be the quickest way to get from place to place. Everyone gets lost in Venice at some time or another – even regular visitors and locals if they are in a part of the town that they’re not familiar with, expect it – and use getting lost to your advantage, you may discover areas that are off the main tourist trail.

  • Vaporetto Waterbus (Actv)

ACTV Water buses ply the canals and are probably world’s most unique means of public transport. The main routes (No. 1 and No. 82) run along the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma and the Piazza San Marco but the can get very busy between 8am and 7pm. Tickets for tourists can be pricey but 12 hour to 72 hour passes are available from ticket offices and offer better value. The passes can also be used on ACTV land busses

  • Gondolas

Gondolas are a unique experience but are expensive and generally the reserve of tourists. Venice gondolas ply the Grand Canal or the much quieter side canals. Minimum costs range from of 60 to 80 Euros (depending on season and time of day) and can be shared with up to six people. Make sure that you agree your price upfront.

  • Water taxis.

Water taxis are also expensive but can be a great one off trip. A water taxi from Marco Polo airport to Rialto costs 95 Euros and is an unforgettable way to get into town.

  • Taxis

Land taxis can be taken from Piazzale Roma and Marco Polo airport.

  • Land Bus (ACTV)

Land buses also stop at Piazzale Roma and can take you as far as Mestre, Treviso and further. No. 5 bus will take you to and from Marco Polo airport.

  • Other water services.

Alilaguna also offer transports services on the canals and between islands. They also operate waterbus services between Marco Polo airport and Venice.
