Getting around London

Transport for London logos
Transport for London (TFL) operates services both below ground (London Underground services). As well as above ground (London Buses, London Overground, Above ground Tube services, Trams and the Docklands Light Railway.)
Fares. London transport operates fare schemes for Underground and DLR with a separate scheme for Buses and Trams. A zoned travel card scheme operates over these which allow passengers to pay for travel from 1 day to a year across zones that the need. Passengers can also use the cashless Oyster card scheme, which is a contact less smart card scheme to access all services. For more information about Oyster click here.

- London Underground

London Underground Logo
London Underground is a huge metro system that serves large parts of Greater London out into the home counties. Known colloquially as ‘The Tube’ the system offers the fastest and easiest ways to get around many major parts of the city. As well as Heathrow Airport – all of the major Railway stations and many places of interest are on the network. there are also many places where people can transfer to local Bus, tram and DLR services.
The system serves 270 stations. The iconic tube map as well as London Underground signage have become symbols of London.
Tickets to ride on the system can be bought from most stations. Saving can be made by purchasing Travel cards which offer access for set period over set zones. Oyster card readers are also in use at all London Underground stations.

- London Buses

London Buses logo
London Buses offers an extensive set of routes through all parts of Greater London and the home counties with links to Airports, all major train stations and many other parts of the capital. Operating over 8,000 red London buses on over 700 routes to some 19,000 stops.
London Buses also operate over 100 night bus routes to all parts of Greater London.
Buses now carry oyster card readers and in the central zone passengers must purchase their ticket before boarding at on of the many bus ticket machines adjacent to most stops.

- London Overground
London overground operate railway and suburban railway services on a number of routes around the capital.(currently 4 lines but TFL is looking to expand this by adding further existing Rail lines)
User can use Oyster cards and applicable travel cards to complete their journeys as well pay in cash at stations.
- Docklands Light Railway

Docklands Light Railway (DLR) logo
London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is a light railway that serves the Docklands and East London. It operates on over 30 miles of lines serving over 40 stations from Bank in the City to Lewisham, Tower Gateway, Stratfoford, London City Airport and has a major hub at Canary Wharf.
Applicable Travel cards, Oyster cards as well as tickets bought in cash at DLR stations can be used.
- London Trams
London’s Tram system operates in South London along 3 routes through South London mainly around Croydon. There are also plans to extend the Tram service across the River Thames as far as Kings Cross.
LONDON AIRPORT CONNECTIONS
- Traveling to and from London Heathrow Airport
Heathrow Airport is actually 5 airports in one with 5 seperate terminal buildings and transport links between them. Check which terminal at Heathrow Airport your airline is flying from by clicking here.
- The Piccadilly line of the London Underground serves all 5 Heathrow terminals and is cheap, frequent and connects you to most places in Central London (via the Underground network). Cost currently about £4
- The Heathrow Express whisks travelers into central London in 15 minutes every 15 minutes and serves all 5 terminals. This is the fastest way into London but at £16.50 is quite pricey.
- Heathrow Connect is a cheaper suburban rail link to Paddington in Central London with intermediate stops.
- National Express coaches link Heathrow to Central London and beyond via Victoria Coach Station.. There are 4 to 7 coaches an hour from their stop adjacent to Terminals 1,2 & 3.. Cost about £4
- Black London Cab. Black taxis can be found outside all of the terminals. Again quite expensive solution at £40 to £80 into central London but you don’t wait and can be cost effective if shared between 4 people.
- London Buses. Not the best option into Central London but good if you are going to one of the areas adjacent to the Airport.
- Traveling to and from London Gatwick Airport
London Gatwick Airport is London’s 2nd Airport and serves major airlines including British Airways.
- The Gatwick Express is the fastest way into Central London and departs both Victoria Station and Gatwick Airport every 15 minutes. (There are also services to & from Brighton) Journey time is 30 to 35 minutes. Costs £16.50.
- National Rail is a cost effective way of getting to & from Gatwick Airport with stopping services into London and to the south coast. Southern offer travel into London (Victoria) for £7.90. First Capital Connect run services to London Bridge, the City , Kings Cross & beyond from £8.90
- National Express run services from Gatwick into London & beyond
- Traveling to and from London Stansted Airport.
London Stansted Airport is used by major airlines as well as budget airlines and charters.
- The Stansted Express runs regular fast services into Central London (Liverpool St.)
- National Express Coaches run regular services into London as well as Cambridge and other cities.
- Budget coach company Terravision run regular cheap services into Central London
