Simple Minds rock Venice in St Marks Square

Simple Minds 30 year tour
Legendary rock band Simple Minds rocked Venice on Friday 24th July with a one off concert in the beautiful surroundings of St Marks Square. The concert will aid the SMS Venice Project which uses money raised to safeguard and restore some of the most important buildings and monuments in Venice.
The concert saw the band performing their track ‘New Gold Mine’ live which can be downloaded from their website for €5 with all proceeds going to the SMS fund. Checkout the Simple Minds website.
SMS stands for ‘Saint Marks Square’ and came to life in 2008 through the united intent of The City of Venice, The Department for Architectural Landscape Heritage of Venice & the Lagoon and Fran Tomasi, events organizer and is supported by the community of Venice. The project aims to raise public awareness by promoting a campaign to collect funds for the protection and conservation of the City.

Radical Nature comes to East London

Radical Nature at The Barbican
Hackney in East London is known for it’s urban sprawl and now for a few weeks this summer it will also be home to… a wheat field.
As part of the Barbican Art exhibition ‘Radical Nature’ a project known as ‘The Dalston Mill’ is taking shape in this unlovely part of London. Featuring a windmill, bread-making ovens and a 20 meter long wheat field, the project aims to bring art into Hackney.
The major new exhibition Radical Nature: Art and Architecture for a Changing Planet was inspired by a similar project in Manhattan in 1982 where a wheat field was planted on two acres of wasteland in Battery Park which produced a harvest worth $260 on land worth over $4bn.

Big Ben chimes in after 150 years of history

Big Ben was first heard in the streets of London on 11th July 1859 and 150 years later a message reading ‘Happy Birthday Big Ben, 150 years, 1859 – 2009′ was projected onto the tower on Saturday evening july 11th.
The clock tower that houses Big Ben was completed in 1859 and has become one of London’s iconic sights and a global symbol. It was designed by Charles Barry as part of the Palace of Westminster – home of the British Parliament.
The parliament building that it replaced was destroyed by fire in 1834.

Dubai to get new bus routes alongside Metro

Nearly 800 new buses, operating some 42 new routes will feed passengers to the new Dubai Metro stations when it opens on 9th September 2009. The new Feeder routes will service the communities around the new metro stations.
The longest walk for commuters from bus to Metro will be 500 metres.

Wi-Fi brings digital treasure hunt to Venice

The brand new city-wide Wi-Fi in Venice has bought a digital treasure hunt to the city’s streets, bridges, museums and galleries.
Whaiwhai is an interactive game based on a plot written by author Alberto Toso Fei. The game will lead users to explore Venice in a new way as users look for clues and discover hidden places in this city-wide treasure hunt. Users will have puzzles to solve and clues to follow in order to reach their goal.
The game already exists in English and Italian versions and as well as Venice, the game can also be played in Rome, Florence and Verona. There are also plans to export Whaiwhai to London, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco.

Tokyo and Moscow top most expensive cities. London drops to 16th
It costs more to live in Tokyo than in any other city in the world according to ‘Mercers 2009 Worldwide Cost of Living survey’ released 7th July 2007.
At $3.25 (£2 / €2.31) for a subway trip. Add in a newspaper and coffee and the total is $11.70 (£7.20 / €8.33) which is more than in any other city in the report.
Tokyo is followed by another Japanese city: Osaka then Moscow in 3rd.
Perhaps the biggest surprise in this years rankings is London which has dropped to 16th (from 3rd last year). This is largely due to the the Pounds drop in value vs. the US Dollar.
Hong Kong keeps its place at 5th from last year.
Milan also drops one place to 11th (from 10th last year). As does Paris at 13th (from 12th last year.)
Dubai moves up to 20th (from 52nd last year).
